As we get older, our brains naturally start to shrink, usually beginning in our 30s or 40s. This process speeds up as we reach our 60s or 70s, and we might notice more significant changes.
While it’s normal for some shrinkage to happen, too much could be a sign of health issues like Alzheimer’s disease.
To keep our brains healthy, it’s important to do a few things regularly. First off, exercise regularly, eat a diet with lots of antioxidants (like the Mediterranean diet), keep your brain busy with activities, make sure you get enough sleep, and keep an eye on things like blood pressure and cholesterol.
It’s also really important to avoid smoking.
Some supplements claim to help keep your brain healthy, but we’re not totally sure how well they work. Eating a balanced diet is usually a better bet.
